About AndrenaM

AndrenaM is building the central nervous system for maritime autonomy by creating a distributed sensing and communication network. Our platform integrates sensors, autonomous vehicles, and AI-driven analytics to provide real-time situational awareness and defense capabilities. Our technology supports critical maritime defense operations for the U.S. Navy and NATO, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in maritime autonomy.

About this role

AndrenaM is seeking an Acoustics & DSP Engineer with a strong background in undersea acoustics, signal processing, and sensor system design. In this role, you’ll be responsible for developing advanced signal processing algorithms and acoustic systems to detect, localize, and classify objects and events in the underwater domain.

Your work will directly contribute to the development of our real-time maritime sensing platform—a distributed, intelligent acoustic network for maritime domain awareness, autonomy, and defense applications. You’ll work closely with systems engineers, software developers, and autonomy experts to deliver high-performance acoustic solutions that work reliably in noisy, dynamic ocean environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement DSP algorithms for passive acoustic sensing applications.
  • Develop and test beamforming, localization, and classification algorithms for real-time underwater applications.
  • Model and analyze acoustic propagation in various marine environments using commercial and custom simulation tools.
  • Support sensor array design, transducer selection, and system-level acoustic integration.
  • Analyze field data from hydrophones and sonar arrays to evaluate system performance and improve detection capabilities.
  • Collaborate with embedded and software teams to deploy real-time DSP pipelines on edge compute platforms.
  • Participate in at-sea testing, data collection, and system validation in real-world ocean environments.
Basic Qualifications
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Acoustics, Ocean Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong background in underwater acoustics, sonar system design, and propagation modeling.
  • Experience with DSP algorithms including FFTs, filtering, matched filtering, beamforming, cross-correlation, and machine learning-based classification.
  • Proficiency in Python, and/or C/C++ for algorithm development and prototyping.
  • Experience with real-time or near-real-time systems, especially those deployed in embedded environments.
  • Strong data analysis skills and ability to work with large datasets from in situ acoustic recordings.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with bias for action and the ability to work independently in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Experience with multichannel hydrophone arrays or vector sensors.
  • Knowledge of ambient noise modeling and noise mitigation techniques.
  • Prior work with acoustic communication systems or modems.
  • Familiarity with NATO or U.S. Navy standards for underwater acoustic systems.
  • Field experience deploying underwater systems and collecting data at sea.
  • Collaborative and growth mindset.
